The Alpha Rainbow – Donald

12 × 12 inches | Wrapped canvas
Tempera paint
Artist: Donald, chimpanzee

A rainbow with a personality all its own. Broad, sweeping strokes of color curl and overlap, creating thick ribbons of paint that seem to tumble across the canvas. Reds and oranges mingle with greens, blues and yellows, while unexpected blends of color emerge between the layers. There’s a playful energy to the composition, with just enough white space to let those colorful swirls shine.

Donald, the longtime alpha male of our chimpanzee troop, is generally a laid-back fellow. He prefers a peaceful afternoon to unnecessary commotion, but when the occasion calls for it, he can make quite an impression. This painting seems to capture a little of both sides: relaxed, confident and full of personality.
